Sports Illustrated picks the Detroit Lions to win Super Bowl 2025

DETROIT — The Detroit Lions graced the cover of Sports Illustrated, and this time for the right reason.

Two writers for the sports publication, Greg Bishop and Conor Orr, picked the Lions to win the Super Bowl this year in its annual “Football Preview” issue.

The Lions have never won the Super Bowl and last won an NFL Championship in 1957 (pre-Super Bowl era).

They are the only NFC team to have never played in the Super Bowl.

The cover features Lions players Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell sitting in a classic 1957 Ford Fairlane. The cover’s headline: “DRIVE TO REVIVE: The Resurgent Lions: Right Team, Right Town, Right Time.

“They’re ready to grab the wheel from Campbell and drive this franchise straight to New Orleans in February, to the Lions’ first Super Bowl,” said Bishop and Orr in the article. “This offseason Goff, Sewell and St. Brown all signed massive contract extensions, securing themselves as tentpoles of the franchise for years to come.”

The Lions are coming off a 12-5 season that ended in a 34-31 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game. It was the Lions first NFC Championship game since the 1991 season.

Detroit hosted the 2024 NFL Draft earlier this year and set a new attendance record with more than 700,000+ people attending the three-day event in downtown Detroit.

The Lions open their season at Ford Field against the Los Angeles Rams at 8:20 p.m. on NBC on Sept. 8, 2024. The Lions defeated the Rams 24-23 in last year’s Wild Card Game.
