American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, and United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower.
American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon, while United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew members attempted to retake the plane.
The attacks killed 2,977 victims, including all 246 passengers and crew members aboard the four aircraft. An additional 19 deaths were those of the hijackers, bringing the total number of people who died that day to 2,996.
Among the victims were 343 New York City firefighters, 23 NYPD officers and 37 Port Authority police officers.
