Despite the name, Of Montreal is actually homemade USA psychedelica from Athens, Georgia.
The band is led by enigmatic Kevin Barnes, who lived in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan during his formative high school years, where he became a musician. His experience living in Detroit, heavily influenced his sound.
Formed in 1996 in Athens by Kevin Barnes, the band is known for constantly reinventing its sound while delivering theatrical, psychedelic live performances.
Of Montreal emerged from the celebrated Athens, Georgia indie scene (which also produced R.E.M. and The B-52’s). They became one of the flagship artists on Polyvinyl Record Co. and helped define indie pop during the 2000s.
The album Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? (2007) is widely regarded as their masterpiece. Their 11-minute long song, The Past Is a Grotesque Animal, is often cited as one of indie rock’s greatest long-form songs.
