Often described as the “Superbowl” of global taxidermy, the World Taxidermy & Fish Carving Championships is the premier international event for taxidermists.
The WTC Trade Show is also the largest gathering of taxidermy supply companies in the world. Over 140 trade show booths are set up.
Fun Facts:
Taxidermy went mainstream in the early 1800’s. Naturalists began preserving and cataloging species, while Victorians would dress stuffed animals for show. Early taxidermy mounts were stuffed with sawdust and rags without regard for actual anatomy.
Louis XV’s rhino was taxidermied. When the rhino was stabbed to death by a revolutionary in 1793, its skin was varnished and stretched over a frame of wooden hoops.
There are 29 million animal specimens contained in London’s Natural History Museum. Habitant dioramas as museums are taxidermy hot spots.
Dermestid Beetles are great at helping skeletonize animals because they will only consume the flesh. You can buy them online.
