Those interested in kayaking or purchasing a kayak are encouraged to attend the Free Kayak Demo Day, Saturday, May 13, noon to 4 p.m. at Belle Isle Park in Detroit. The free event, hosted by Riverside Kayak Connection, will take place on the beach near the Bath House.
The Free Kayak Demo Day is a great opportunity to try out kayaking and learn which kayak is designed for different bodies of water. The knowledgeable staff and volunteers of Riverside Kayak Connection will answer questions and guide guests through the kayak selection process. Kayaks, life jackets and paddles will be provided. Participants should dress for the possibility of getting wet. Participants are welcome to paddle the entire time, but are asked to keep the time to 10 minutes per kayak to allow others a chance to paddle different models. Various styles of kayaks are available for a test drive, including sit-on-tops, recreational, fishing and touring.
“For those who have been eyeing a kayak or for those who want to experience different styles of kayaks, Free Kayak Demo Day is a great opportunity to experience paddling on the Detroit River,” said Darlisa Rickman, Belle Isle event coordinator for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. “The Detroit River has become a destination for paddlers, and the DNR thanks Riverside Kayak Connection for extending this opportunity to the community.”
Children between the ages of 12 and 18 are welcome to paddle, but must have a parent or guardian present on the water with them. Riverside Kayak Connection reserves the right to raise the age limit based on the water and weather conditions.
Participants must register at the on-site tent, sign a waiver and wear a life jacket while on the water. The event is free to attend, but a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to Belle Isle Park.
