Detroit is a great town for St. Patty’s Day parties!

And we are grateful to have what is widely considered one of the best St. Patty’s Day parties in the USA: the Old Shillelagh!

Located in Detroit’s Greektown, The Old Shillelagh Bar has been a Detroit Irish pub institution since it opened in 1975 by a retired Detroit cop who grew up in Dublin, Ireland.

The Old Shillelagh has 3-floors of fun (top one is a rooftop deck), and massive adjoining party lot.

On St. Patty’s Day, the bar opens at 7:00 a.m. Next to the bar, the two massive beer tents open at 9am. The 2nd floor and rooftop open at Noon.

It’s $20.00 entry. Inside the tent will be a live band and a DJ.

GET THERE EARLY! We recommend parking inside the Greektown Casino parking garage.

Things to Remember When Drinking

1.) Do not drink and drive. ALWAYS have a designated driver. You can also use a taxi cab, Uber, Lyft, etc. There is absolutely no justification ever for drinking and driving. We don’t care how “cool” you think you are, you should not drink and drive.

2.) Stay hydrated with WATER. Every other beer, get a cup or bottle of water and drink it.

3.) Eat FOOD. Do not drink on an empty stomach. Alcohol starts getting absorbed through the stomach lining and small intestine, thus, if you have food in your stomach, the alcohol won’t hit you as hard.

4.) Do not use your credit card or debit card. Take out a set amount of CASH and stick to a loosely pre-planned budget.

5.) Always RESPECT ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT. Whatever happens, the men & women who work in law enforcement are here to protect us, they are not your enemies. They also deal with alot of unnecessary crap from people. Don’t be one of those jerks who gives them a hard time.

In 1737, the first St. Patrick’s Day in the USA was celebrated in Boston.

NYC has the world’s largest St. Patty’s Day Parade. Some 300,000 people march down 5th Avenue from 44th to 79th Street. They are cheered on by 3 million spectators!

Detroit’s cousin city, Chicago, has been dyeing the Chicago River green on St. Patty’s Day since 1962.
