Senate Bill 656, now Public Act 136 of 2022, which passed in June 2022, allows restaurants and other establishments with on-site liquor licenses in Michigan to provide self-dispensing equipment so customers can pour their own drinks.
Eastern Market Brewing Co., a community-focused craft brewery based in Detroit, is opening Michigan’s first fully self-service taproom in Royal Oak this month.
The new concept, Lincoln Tap, features a 30-tap self-pour draft system powered by iPourIt technology and will serve as an interactive showroom for craft beers brewed by Eastern Market Brewing Co., and its experimental arm, Ferndale Project.
The self-serve tap wall system will offer a rotating selection of beers, plus wine and cold brew coffee. Guests can explore details for each product on touchscreens above the taps and pour as much or as little as they please. RFID-enabled wristbands are used to activate the system and track the ounces.
iPourIt aided in passing the legislation, which expands the self-pour market to 45 of the 50 U.S. states.
Initially reluctant about the self-serve model, the company’s partners wound up at a self-pour taproom in Florida earlier this year and their experience inspired them to consider the technology for their own business. They started researching and discovered that the bill was being pushed forward in Michigan.
A soft launch and grand opening will take place later this month.
