YPSILANTI, MI — Eastern Michigan University has been named one of the nation’s most military and veteran friendly universities in the USA, according to new rankings.
EMU was ranked 2nd in the nation and first in Michigan for large public universities, according to Military Friendly’s 2021-22 list.
Military Friendly provides a comprehensive guide for veterans and their families, using data sources from federal agencies, veteran students and survey information from participating organizations, according to an EMU news release.
EMU established its veteran support center in 2014 and later named it in honor of U.S. Army (Retired) Lt. Colonel Charles S. Kettles, a Medal of Honor winner, EMU alum, and Ypsilanti resident.
“We are pleased that EMU has achieved this accolade for the fourth consecutive year,” said Mike Wise, EMU’s assistant director of military and veteran services. “EMU military and veteran students and their families have exceptional support throughout the campus, from the top on down.”
More than 1,200 schools participated in the 2021-22 survey, with 747 earning a designation of military-friendly.
According to the data, EMU exceeded benchmarks for all six categories measured, including:
- Academic policies and compliance (97.61% exceeds standard)
- Admission and orientation (74.94% exceeds standard)
- Culture and commitment (84.61% exceeds standard)
- Financial aid and assistance (24.44% exceeds standard)
- Graduation and career (84.14% exceeds standard)
- Military student support and retention (94.18% exceeds standard)
Some other Michigan schools that are very military friendly are:
Northern Michigan University (Marquette, MI) is ranked as a top 10 small public school, according to Military Friendly’s rankings.
Olivet College (Olivet, MI) is ranked as a top 10 school for private institutions not offering doctorate degrees, the report shows.
Delta College (Saginaw, MI) earned a top 10 mark for large community colleges.
