Cancun International Boat Show & Marine Expo

Need to get out of the cold north for a few days in December? Head down to Mexico for the boat show!

Cancun, the “Yachting Capital of Mexico,” will host the annual Cancun International Boat Show soon.

Mexico is the USA’s 2nd largest recreational marine export market.

This year’s event, which will be held in person, will include a main exhibit area, a series of smaller exhibit areas, a demonstration area, in-water boat exhibits for sea trials, a water taxi yacht and a collection of luxury yachts in the marina basin.

Haven’t been to Cancun before? We’ll sum it up real quick for ya.

Beautiful area. Cancun was created by the government in 1974 when the first 3 hotels opened. Cancun is mostly divided into downtown (Cancun Centro) and Isla Cancun (Zona Hotelera, aka: the Hotel Zone), and you have the Nichupte Lagoon (too many crocodiles for swimming). Main draw of Cancun is the Hotel Zone, a narrow 14 mile strip of hotels along the gorgeous white sandy beach.

Things to Remember

1.) Most hotels typically put a $500 hold on your credit card “just in case”. They typically charge all food/drinks to your room, unless you want to pay immediately, and will charge you at the end of your stay.

2.) Want to save a ton of money on food and drinks? Make your way to the great supermarket Soriana Super Kukulcan Plaza. It’s on the 2nd floor inside shopping mall Plaza Kukulkan. Here you can buy fifths of liquor for $15.00 and under. And all the food is crazy cheap.

3.) In your luggage, bring a plastic or stainless steel 30 oz drink tumbler. Pour your drinks into this and save money during your beach vacation getaway.

What to check out in the Hotel Zone?

Hacienda El Mortero (recreation of authentic 1600’s dining experience; and they have mariachi’s)

Coco Bongo (Mexico’s most popular club)

Dady’O (some nights the Acapulco Devil)

Senor Frogs (Spring Break hotspot)

The City (largest club in Latin America)

La Europea liquor store (best liquor selection; next to El Fish)

El Fish Fritanga (featured on Diners, Drive In’s & Dives)

Harry’s Steakhouse (one of the best places to eat in Cancun)

Beyond Cancun, there’s:

  • Mayan ruins from ancient Mayan cities (Tulum and Chichen Itza)
  • Snorkeling cenotes (suh-no-tays) underwater caverns
  • Scuba diving in Cozumel (there’s 20 coral reefs here and Jacques Cousteau was here in the 1950’s)
  • You can take a ferry to Isla Mujeres (whale sharks off coast; and they have a turtle farm)
  • To top it off, the whole Yucatan Peninsula (where Cancun is located) was where the asteroid hit (Chicxulub crater) 66 million years ago and wiped out the dinosaurs!
