Billionaire Detroit-based Lebanese businessman Matty Moroun owns the Ambassador Bridge (world’s largest international suspension bridge), Michigan Central Train Station (Detroit’s coolest landmark), and a ton of other crap including a train company and now he wants to build and control another bridge! He’s like Rich Uncle Pennybags from Monopoly!
Moroun’s company the Detroit International Bridge Company (12225 Stephens Rd, Warren) applied to the Michigan Dept. of Environmental Quality’s Water Resources Division, to build a bridge across the St. Clair River.
Crossing the St. Clair River, the 1,750ft long bridge would span from the mainland (4175 Pointe Tremble Rd, Algonac) to the island (1784 North Channel Drive, Harsens Island).
It would be a two-lane bridge with a 150-foot draw bridge section and would rest 32-feet above the water.
Moroun tried pulling this same gambit in 2007 and 2012 but was denied both times. What are your thoughts on this? Do you want a bridge or do you like Dave Bryson’s ferry?
Come on out and voice your opinions! Also, the MDEQ will be accepting letters from the public until March 20th, 2016 regarding their thoughts on the bridge before they make an official decision of allowing or denying the permit.
