Thanks to Hometown Life for this:
The largest annual fundraiser for CARES in Farmington Hills could help feed thousands of people over the next year.
The third Annual Family Fun event runs Tuesday, Aug. 6, and Wednesday, Aug. 7, at Shiawassee Park, 32340 Shiawassee Road. The event features a rubber duck race, movie night, children’s activities, an appearance by the World’s Largest Rubber Duck and more.
“The money all goes to help support our families who use CARES as an extra food support system,” said Todd Lipa, CARES’ executive director. “CARES is a campus of hope. We help people who’ve fallen on hard times. Nobody should go hungry.”
The event kicks off with a movie at 6 p.m. Tuesday. People are encouraged to bring a picnic to the movie and meet the World’s Largest Rubber Duck, standing more than six stories. On Wednesday, visitors will be able to see the duck and enjoy live music, bounce houses, a petting farm and more.
Lipa said the duck race draws thousands of entrees each year and is the main source of fundraising for the event. Racers can purchase a duck online or at the event through 5 p.m. Wednesday. Prices for the ducks range between $5 for one and $100 for 28.
Winners of the race, scheduled for about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, can win free groceries for a year, a television, a family photo shoot and more. Lipa said he expects the race to raise between $75,000 and $100,000 this year with about 7,500 ducks. Aside from monetary donations, people are also encouraged to bring non-perishable food items or packages of toilet paper.
