Mike Berry has run Underwater Criminal Investigation in Richmond, Virginia for decades.
Mike, an FBI National Academy grad, is Commander of the Virginia State Police search-and-rescue team. He has helped prepare divers all over the country and taught them the art and science of Underwater Criminal Investigation.
There are 3 main types of recovery ops: bodies, vehicles and evidence.
Many times they will first use Side-Scan Sonar to pinpoint the physical location of an object before diving down blindly to look for it.
When you find a body, put it in a body bag underwater, then bring it to the surface.
