The Hope College Pull (The Pull) is an annual tug-of-war contest.
It’s held across the Black River in Holland, Michigan on the fourth Saturday after Labor Day at 3:00 PM.
It is sponsored by Hope College.
Started in 1898, it iss one of the USA’s oldest standing college traditions.
Each team — composed of 18 “pullers,” who lay in pits and pull with all their might, and 18 “moralers,” who provide moral support and direction as the team’s “eyes” from above the pits — fight for every inch of rope.
Most matches last upwards of three hours.
However, the 1956 pull lasted a record-breakingly short 2 minutes and 40 seconds.
Competitors are 40 members of both the Freshman and Sophomore Class. The freshman team is coached by juniors while the sophomore team is coached by seniors. Each Pull Team is named for the graduating year of that class.
