Over 3,000 Viking graves are in the Birka, Sweden area and only 1,100 have been excavated. Birka is one of the world’s largest Viking burial grounds.
One grave, unearthed in 1899, contained 2 horses, 2 shields, sword, axe, spear, arrows, battle knife and a skeleton named BJ-581.
After extensive genetics testing on DNA from the skeleton’s tooth and arm bone, it was conclusively proven that the skeleton was a Shieldmaiden Viking female warrior!
