BENTON HARBOR, MI – The company that owns the closed Palisades Nuclear Power Plant will host an open house for the public to learn about efforts to restart the electricity generation station.
The nuclear plant in Covert Township is the focus of state and federal efforts to repower the facility and return its 800-megawatt capacity to the power grid. They say that nuclear power generation does not create planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions and can provide baseload energy for the grid as coal-fired power plants are closed.
Holtec International will host the open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at the Palisades Joint Informational Center, 330 W. Main St., Benton Harbor.
“The primary focus is informational. It is an opportunity for members of the public to learn about the repower and ask questions of our subject matter experts,” said Nicholas Culp, Palisades spokesperson.
Holtec bought the Palisades plant in 2022 to decommission the 1970s-era facility. The company now wants to repower the plant and if successful, it would become the first plant in the U.S. commercial nuclear fleet to restart operations after decommissioning began.
Additionally, the company will have human resources officials available during the open house for anyone who wants to learn about career opportunities at Palisades, Culp said.
