GWAR is known for their hilarious and gory stage shows, often involving green slime, the decapitating of effigies spraying blood on the crowd from their neck-stumps, and people being fed to The Pit.
Each member of the band wears custom armor, monster suits, and prosthetics.
The GWAR backstory is they are intergalactic barbarian warriors who’ve spent millions of years conquering planets, partying, and generally being the worst beings imaginable. They were banished to Earth where they discovered music and started a metal band to destroy humanity.
They blend thrash metal, punk, and heavy metal all while fighting bloody battles onstage.
Yes, co-founder and alien warlord Oderus Urungus (Dave Brockie) died in 2014 but the band plays on, still kicking ass!
Under all the insanity, GWAR is a one of a kind rolling satire of power, politics, celebrity, violence, and excess. It’s really a comedy theater troupe and a metal band fused into one.
Everyone should experience the fun intensity of a GWAR show at least once.
