Roger LeLievre, editor of Know Your Ships, is doing a book signing.
Marine Publishing Co.’s annual field guide, “Know Your Ships: Guide to Boats & Boatwatching on the Great Lakes & St. Lawrence Seaway,” offers a guide of the freighters, tankers, tugs, barges, salties, passenger ships, international visitors and other vessels in the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway.
It is marking its 65th edition in 2024.
LeLievre typically sells around 8,000 copies annually.
LeLievre grew up in Sault St. Marie, Michigan near the Soo Locks and spent his summers at his grandparents’ home there on the St. Mary’s River. In the early 1960’s, his grandfather worked the docks, putting coal into freighters for fuel. He fell in love with boats and was introduced to a local photographer of Great Lakes ships, Tom Manse, who began publishing, ‘Know Your Ships’ – a directory of vessels that traveled the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence Seaway – in 1959. When Tom passed away in 1995, he left the legacy to LeLeivre.
For 30 years, Roger was the entertainment writer for the Ann Arbor News.
Now he spends his time editing and publishing Know Your Ships, an annual 200-page reference guide to boats that sail the Great Lakes.
