Roger LeLievre, editor of Know Your Ships, will return to Algonac for a book signing.
Marine Publishing Co.’s annual field guide, “Know Your Ships: Guide to Boats & Boatwatching on the Great Lakes & St. Lawrence Seaway,” offers a guide of the freighters, tankers, tugs, barges, salties, passenger ships, international visitors and other vessels in the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway.
LeLievre typically sells around 8,000 copies annually.
LeLievre grew up in Sault St. Marie near the Soo Locks and spent his summers at his grandparents’ home there on the St. Mary’s River. In the early 1960’s, his grandfather worked the docks, putting coal into freighters for fuel. He fell in love with boats and was introduced to a local photographer of Great Lakes ships, Tom Manse, who began publishing, ‘Know Your Ships’ – a directory of vessels that traveled the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence Seaway – in 1959. When Tom passed away in 1995, he left the legacy to LeLeivre.
For 30 years, Roger was the entertainment writer for the Ann Arbor News.
Now he spends his time editing and publishing Know Your Ships, an annual 200-page reference guide to boats that sail the Great Lakes.
Books will be on sale at a $5 discount and LeLievre will be available to autograph them.
