Jeff “Skunk” Baxter is an American virtuoso Grammy winning guitarist, known for his stints in the rock bands Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers and Spirit.
Baxter appeared on the first three Steely Dan albums, 1972’s Can’t Buy a Thrill, 1973’s Countdown to Ecstasy, and 1974’s Pretzel Logic. Arguably, his most iconic moment came in the form of the frills and solo heard on 1974’s ‘Rikki Don’t Lose That Number’, which remains the band’s highest charting hit.
Famously, Baxter left Steely Dan in 1974 to join the Doobie Brothers.
He has toured with those hit-packed bands as well as with: Julian Lennon, Linda Rondstat and played on sessions for Ringo Starr, Joni Mitchell, Bryan Adams, Freddie Hubbard, John Cougar Mellencamp, Cher, Rod Stewart, Dolly Parton, Julio Iglesias, Barbara Streisand, Gene Simmons, Carly Simon, Donna Summer, and The Beach Boys, (to name a few).
More recently, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Doobie Brothers in 2020. And his new album came out in June 2022.
Not many people know that Skunk is also a missile defense expert.
His next-door neighbor was a retired engineer who worked on the Sidewinder missile program in the 1950s, and after getting to know Baxter, he bought him a subscription to Aviation Week magazine, which piqued his interest in the military, and particularly missile defense systems. It kicked off a long career as a defense consultant commenced. At one point, he even became the chair of the Congressional Advisory Board on missile defense.
