Michigan has been blessed with so many gifts: vibrant diverse communities, natural beauty, hardy souls, and nationally renowned (international if you include Canada) baseball writers.
As the regular season segues into the post season, we are very excited to share that Peter Morris, Tom Stanton, Gary Gillette and Jesse Goldberg Strassler will spin yarns, share anecdotes, answer questions and remind visitors while football is okay, baseball IS America’s pastime!
Peter Morris: Besides winning a Michigan Notable Author award for, “Baseball Fever: Early Baseball in Michigan,” Peter is the only person to have won the Seymour Medal, Casey Award, and the Henry Chadwick Award. Peter has appeared on NPR, the Wall Street Journal (was recently cited on a Detroit Tigers’ broadcast) and many other publications. Peter was also the first International Scrabble Champion.
Tom Stanton: The 2008 Michigan Author winner and Wayne State University, Tom won the Casey Award for his book, “The Final Season,” a book about Tiger Stadium in 2001. Tom has also written, “Ty and the Babe,” and, “Hank Aaron and the Home Run that Changed America.” Too, Tom is one of America’s foremost Elton John fan.
Gary Gillette: Besides having written and edited scores of books and articles about baseball, and sports in general- including books for ESPN, and served as a baseball commentator for NPR, Gary has spearheaded campaigns to save both Tiger Stadium and the Negro Baseball Hamtramck Stadium. An intrepid gamer, Gary is also an expert witness on baseball-related litigation.
Jesse Goldberg Strassler: Not only has Jesse served as the Lansing Lugnuts’ voice since 2009, Jesse was chosen as Ballpark Digests’ 2019 Minor League Broadcaster of the Year. So far Jesse has written two books: The Baseball Thesaurus and The Football Thesaurus. Jesse has also served as the broadcaster for the Central Michigan Chippewas women’s basketball team.
