COLUMBIAVILLE, MICH. — Among the many amenities that come with the tiny, picturesque cabins at Getaway The Thumb, the cell phone lockboxes might be the most intriguing.
The optional lockboxes are meant to inspire guests to truly unplug and be present — one of the aims of Getaway, a vacation destination company that owns similar tiny cabin “Outposts” across the country.
“Our Outposts are designed to be more than a destination, but a way to create distance from the relentless demands of work, schedules, and technology,” a statement on the company’s website says.
The Getaway destination in Michigan’s Thumb is one of the company’s newer locations; it opened its first Michigan location in Barber Creek, near South Haven, in 2021.
Getaway The Thumb has 45 cabins on 153 private, wooded acres in Columbiaville, Michigan located a little more than 1 hour from Detroit and 30 minutes from Flint.
The cabins are arranged to offer a secluded, Up North feel, and the site features several nature trails that wind through old-growth trees, around wetlands, and along a river.
Each cabin has a large picture window next to the bed for soaking up the scenery, plus a private outdoor seating area with a fire pit. Other cabin amenities include air conditioning and heat, a private bathroom with hot water, a kitchenette with a two-burner stovetop and mini fridge, and optional add-ons like s’mores kits and a “sustenance box” with oatmeal, pasta, soup, jerky, cookies and other treats. And, of course, there are the lockboxes — but whether or not to use them is each guest’s choice.

The company offers special discounts for students, teachers, healthcare professionals, and active duty military, veterans, and first responders. According to the website, reservations for September and October 2023 start at $114/night.
