Excellent Detroit-based afrobeat funk band ODU AFROBEAT ORCHESTRA will be playing live at the new Kola African Lounge on Saturday, March 21st, 2015!
Led by Nigerian-born Adeboye Adegbenro, ODU has 13 members in the band, playing a very unique Detroit funk sound and this show is definitely worth the trip. They are one of the hidden jewels of Detroit’s underground music scene.
Adeboye (aka: Boye) is an interesting character himself. He grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, played with the famed afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti then came to the United States and animated several Walt Disney movies (ie: Pocohontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, etc.). He now teaches as an adjunct professor at the College of Creative Studies in Detroit.
He is also a hard-core IFA practicioner. IFA is an African system of divination. IFA originated among the Yoruba in Nigeria and the band’s name ODU is a tribute to IFA. There are 256 ODU (ie: ancient situations) that double as mystical patterns of energy.
An IFA diviner (Babalawo) throws 16 palm nuts, kola nuts or cowrie shells on a circular divination tray. How these items land, creates a pattern. The Babalawo starts receiving information when The Sign of the Odu appears.
