Since 1987, on the first Saturday in February, Detroit native Tom Derry has thrown a party for his favorite ballplayer, Babe Ruth.
The annual Babe Ruth Birthday Party will be held at Nemo’s Sports Bar, a famous spot on the red brick road in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood.
Nemo’s was opened in 1965 by Nemo Springstead. Nemo died in 1982 and now Tom Springstead and his family run it.
The original Tiger Stadium (aka: Briggs Field, aka: Navin Field) used to be located right by Nemo’s before moving to Comerica Park in Downtown Detroit.
Back when it was Navin Field, Babe Ruth hit his 700th home run in 1934 right here in Detroit.
In 2010, Tom Derry founded the Navin Fields Grounds Crew and they lovingly cared for it for years until it reopened as The Corner Ballpark.
Come check out the party for a fun time!
