Masters of the Universe (1987) is a live-action fantasy/science fiction movie based on the hugely popular 1980s Mattel toy line and cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
Directed by Gary Goddard, the film stars Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. Langella plays Skeletor with a Shakespearean intensity and surprisingly genuine menace.
The story follows He-Man traveling from the Planet Eternia to Earth after the villain Skeletor conquers Castle Grayskull and seeks ultimate cosmic power.
Much of the movie takes place in small-town America after a dimensional key accidentally transports the heroes there, thereby giving the film a strange mix of sword-and-sorcery fantasy, 1980s teen adventure, and low-budget sci-fi.
This film is peak 1980s fantasy aesthetic: practical effects, synth music, smoky sets, chrome armor, laser weapons, and exaggerated costumes give it a very distinctive retro feel.
