The 1973 rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar will be screening at the beautiful old Redford Theatre in Detroit.
The film tells the story of the final days of Jesus through rock music.
It actually started as a concept album, then became a hit Broadway show, then became a film featuring a 70s counterculture hippie theater troupe reenacting the Bible.
And it was shot entirely on location in the Judean Desert, ancient ruins around the Dead Sea area, the ancient fortress of Masada built by Herod, etc.
This cult classic is one of the boldest attempts ever to merge religion, rock music, and experimental filmmaking and it still feels unusual today. There’s been nothing like it before or since.
