Detroit Boat Club Beer Fest is a restoration fundraiser geared towards raising money to help fix up the Detroit Boat Club, which has recently been renamed the Belle Isle Boat House.
This is an indoor & outdoor beer festival and there will be 75+ craft beers, live music and more.
Built in 1902, the Detroit Boat Club building has seen better days but it’s an architectural gem.
When you drive over the MacArthur Bridge from mainland Detroit to Belle Isle, the Detroit Boat Club is on your left (the east side).
Friends of Detroit Rowing, a non-profit which owns the building, helps the Detroit Boat Club Crew have a clubhouse here.
Founded in 1839, the DBCC is the oldest racing club in North America.
The entire 3-floor Detroit Boat Club clubhouse is built on cedar piling, essentially stilts, since the Detroit River flows underneath the entire building.
The backyard features a 50-meter Olympic sized swimming pool.
In 1932, Johnny Weissmuller (the original Tarzan) qualified for the Olympics swimming in the pool here. He then taught swimming classes all Summer long here at the DBC.
The backyard also features a small bandshell/bandstand.
In 1996, the city of Detroit closed the social club and took over the building for public use.
The center-top of the building is capped with a Monitor (light well).
There’s also the Oak Room (aka: the old Men’s Dining Room), the Ballroom, atrium, Bridgeview room, 3rd floor Naval Boardroom and more.
