Coffy 1973 Pam Grier

The Redford Theatre Annex is located next door to the main Redford Theatre.

Inside the annex, the Motor City Cinema Society (MCCS) is screening cool 16mm prints of old movies.

Coffy (1973) is a dynamite blaxploitation film starring the luscious yet deadly Pam Grier.

Directed by Jack Hill and co-written by Hill and Grier, this film is one of the quintessential blaxploitation movies and some say, Grier’s finest film. Coffy was shot in 21 days and grossed $8.5 million dollars.

“Coffy. Black and stacked and packed with fury!”

Many of Pam’s films featured revenge motifs and she played a strong character. She was a sex goddess of the 1970’s, using her femininity as a weapon.

Grier was a Denver Broncos cheerleader in 1967. She did a nude spread for Playboy in 1973. She sung background vocals for Bobby Womack and Sly & the Family Stone.

Plot:

A nurse serves inner-city drug dealers with some vigilante justice after her sister becomes their latest victim.

Fun Fact:

The idea to hide various weapons in Coffy’s afro came from Pam Grier herself.

Other Fun Fact:

In February 2014, Detroit’s Redford Theatre hosted Pam Grier herself for a two-day film festival.

She told the audience that her film, The Big Doll House had its world premiere at the Grand Circus Theater (now the Detroit opera house) back in 1971.
