Richie Hawtin is one of the most influential figures in electronic music history, especially in the worlds of minimal techno, Detroit techno, and experimental electronic music.
Although born in England, Hawtin grew up in Windsor, Ontario, directly across from Detroit. That geographic proximity mattered enormously. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he became deeply connected to Detroit’s original techno pioneers, especially Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, collectively known as the Belleville Three. Hawtin absorbed Detroit techno’s machine-driven futurism and then evolved it into something colder, more minimal, and highly experimental.
His main styles are minimal, Detroit, experimental, acid, ambient.
His most famous alias is Plastikman. Under Plastikman, he created dark, hypnotic, minimalist records built around Roland drum machines and repetitive loops. The music often feels mechanical, psychedelic, sparse, and immersive rather than melodic or pop-oriented.
