World View Enterprises, a near-space exploration company based in Tucson, Arizona, will use high-altitude balloons to take people 100,000 feet (aka: 20 miles) above Earth.
The project is led by Jane Poynter (one of the eight original Biosphere 2 crew members) and will launch from newly built Spaceport Tucson in 2017. The cost per ride is $75,000, which is fairly reasonable relative to the competition.
The high-altitude helium-filled balloon and parawing will hold a 10,000lb pressurized capsule that can hold 6 passengers and 2 crew members.
Floating 100,000 feet above the Earth, you’ll see the curvature of our planet and the vastness of outer space.
The journey from Spaceport Tucson to the stratosphere is 300 miles. You spend 2 hours floating in the stratosphere and the total length of the journey is 5-6 hours.
